The need for humanity to act is more important than ever, as we begin to see the effects of climate change on our planet. And, as with other sectors, water and sewerage companies in the UK have an important role to play.
To support this, the Environment Agency introduced the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), a piece of legislation with the specific purpose of preventing harmful industrial emissions, whilst promoting the best available techniques to achieve this, that are energy and resource efficient.
Through the IED, the Environment Agency is holding wastewater treatment companies to account, to make improvements to the control of their emissions to land, water and air. Failure to comply could result in unlimited financial penalties.
As we know, treating wastewater can come at a high cost to the environment with sewage sludge tanks producing large amounts of harmful emissions, such as hydrosulphide and hydrocarbon. To control and reduce these emissions, Odour Control Units (OCUs) are essential pieces of equipment to filter and purify the toxic gases in the sludge tanks before they are released into the atmosphere.
Odour control improvement and maintenance is vital in achieving wastewater compliance, ensuring your OCUs are working effectively can reduce harmful gases in the air. With over 20 years of experience, Integrated Water Services Mechanical & Electrical (IWS M&E) is a specialist contractor with the knowledge and tools to help water companies tackle this challenge.
Our expertise lies in OCU remedial works to ensure optimum operation, including:
- Recommissioning OCUs
- Installing additional features into sludge tanks
- Making improvements to fans, temperature sensors, irrigation pipework, sludge tank hatches and roofs
- Rewiring Motor Control Centres (MCC) and control equipment
- All required Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA), civil alterations and final commissioning.
Having been recently commissioned to complete IED compliance remedial works on OCUs at wastewater sites across England, we work directly with UK WASCs or as a specialist sub-contractor to the large UK water sector contractors, providing tailored, professional and cost-effective services.
